Biallelic AIPL1 variants are associated with a spectrum of inherited retinal disease, ranging from severe Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) to later onset retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Heterozygotes present with a milder, later onset cone rod dystrophy and RP.

LCA is a congenital-onset, rapid and progressive disease leading to severe vision impairment and/or loss of vision.
